I don’t know if it’s the amazing photography by Bas Princen that makes this book special or the fact that it was delivered at 11pm on my doorstep. On a saturdaynight.

Het parlement van het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest is aan uitbreiding toe. Het Waalse architectenbureau COOPARCH mocht hiervoor het ontwerp tekenen, en weldra zal bovenstaande kubus verrijzen in de Lombaardenstraat. Ik kan mij echter niet van de indruk ontdoen dat ik dit ontwerp al eens eerder heb gezien. Watercube iemand?

Het Nederlandse design magazine Items heeft Studio Dumbar ingeruild voor Thonik. Daarmee verdween ook meteen de heerlijke broodletter: Collis.

Imagine a highly industrialized landscape, only consisting of concrete, steel and asphalt. Small strips of grass have to compensate for the pollution caused by dense traffic and exhaust pipes. Now imagine a slightly eccentric pigeon, whose fight for survival could be only interpreted by humans as a work of art.
In February 1997, an iron pigeon nest was discovered by workers at the Esso oil refinery, Rotterdam. Dutch biologist extraordinaire Kees Moeliker was called to the case and had to conclude that this iron nest was indeed built by a pigeon, using steel wire and feces.

Russian Criminal Tattoo
This final volume of previously unpublished drawings and photographs completes the “Russian Criminal Tattoo Encyclopadia” trilogy. Danzig Baldaevs unparalleled ethnographic achievement, documenting over 3,000 tattoo drawings, was made during a lifetime working as a prison guard. The motifs depicted represent the uncensored lives of the criminal classes, ranging from violence and pornography to politics and alcohol. In this title, a medieval knight is surrounded by the severed heads of his enemies, a naked woman simultaneously services a man and two dwarfs, a crying President Gorbachev grips a human bone between sabre-like fangs, a group of angels drinks vodka with God on a cloud, and the meanings of these arresting images are explained to the uninitiated eye. Accompanied by graphic photographs showing the grim reality of the Russian prison system and some of the alarming characters that inhabit it, the illustrated criminals of Russia tell the tale of their closed society.

Vandaag is het 19de Festival International de l’Affiche et du Graphisme van start gegaan. Naast een jaarlijkse affiche wedstrijd (die vorig jaar nog gewonnen werd door de Nederlandse Mooren en Van der Velden) zijn er tal van tentoonstellingen en workshops georganiseerd in en rond het Franse Chaumont.
Zo is er dit jaar een expositie rond de nieuwe Zürich Scene, die soms te overschat wordt omdat de ontwerpers kunnen teren op de faam van hun Zwitserse voorgangers.
